Ala. (WBMA) —Discussions surrounding data centers are back in the spotlight in West Alabama, as Northport city leaders considered how the city could regulate future development
During a meeting tonight, the City Council voted against a complete moratorium on data centers.
Instead, leaders said they want to explore creating a specific zone within the city where data centers could be permitted.
City officials said establishing a designated zone could give the city more control over where and how data center development takes place.
Northport City Administrator Tera Tubbs said city officials have not been contacted by potential data center developers.
“Nobody has reached out to us,” said Tubbs.
The council also took steps toward plans for a new City Hall during the meeting.
In addition, leaders approved a measure to explore the possibility of holding a music festival in Northport next spring.
