Cruz and Bardem attended the Bunker press conference on September 8. Florian Zeller directed the psychological drama. Cruz and Bardem play a married couple facing a serious relationship crisis. Their characters become entangled with a survivalist bunker project.
The film follows Bardem’s character, an architect hired by a wealthy tech billionaire. He agrees to build a survivalist bunker for the billionaire. The project eventually affects his 17-year marriage. The story explores fear, isolation, and how people view others.
Cruz said avoiding politics would feel contradictory while discussing the movie. She explained that Bunker reflects issues affecting the world today. She also connected those issues to future generations.
“There are so many things in this film that it would be really contradictory,” Cruz said, as She explained why refusing to discuss politics would not make sense. “I don’t think it would make sense to say, ‘I don’t talk about politics.'”
Bardem also addressed the responsibility that comes with having a public platform. He said everyone has the right to express their views. However, he acknowledged that artists have greater access to audiences.
“Obviously I have more rehis creates a different level of responsibility. He said artists should remain responsible toward the world around them
Bardem connected that responsibility to Bunker’s central themes. The film questions how people respond to fear and unfamiliarity. It also examines isolation and the criminalization of others.
The couple also joked about working together after knowing each other for decades. Bardem joked that they never argue during their collaborations. Cruz quickly challenged that claim with a laugh.
“I know you for more than 30 years,” Cruz said. “Imagine if we’d never had an argument.”
Zeller said he wanted their real relationship to influence the film. He drew inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. The director wanted to blur the boundaries between fiction and reality.
