Tx —The debate over data centers popping up here in San Antonio and all throughout Texas has prompted calls of regulation from city leaders and the community
Tonight District 6 Councilman Ric Galvan hosted a town hall meeting to hear from the community before city council votes on two proposals to regulate <a href="https://axiomcore.info/the-us-is-fighting-over-data-centers-china-is-building-them-and-fast/" title="The US is fighting over data centers. China is building them, and fast”>data centers.
Proposal 1 will automatically permit new data centers as long as they are within certain zoning districts that are at least 500 feet away from residential homes, schools, daycares, assisted living facilities, and hospitals.
Proposal 1 would not require a vote from city council; however, Proposal 2 would require a city council vote. Proposal 2 would also give the community an opportunity to make public comments before the data center would be approved.
Public commenters at Tuesday’s town hall meeting voiced their concerns.
“After hearing what everyone said today it sounds like Proposal 2 needs to be implemented. We have three hospitals in this area. What’s going to happen to the ICU when the electricity goes out, and their generators are not enough?”
Councilman Galvan says he is also advocating for data centers to only be allowed to use recycled water. The District 6 Councilman says he supports Proposal 2.
“I think primarily what we should be looking towards is that every data center that comes to San Antonio goes before City Council for a full vote.”
City Council will vote on the two proposals on Oct. 29.
