CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) —Multiple data center projects have been proposed across West Virginia, with a new development announced this week.
As Gov. Patrick Morrisey highlights economic development with hyperscale data centers, opposition to these facilities continues to grow.
“As more of these hyperscale data centers are announced across West Virginia, the concerns across the communities that are going to be impacted by them continue to pop up,” Putnam United member Heather Ransom said.
Groups from Putnam County to Tucker County are coming together to demand state and local leaders prioritize communities over computers by forming what they call the Data Center Accountability Project.
“We believe in local control and we believe these projects need to be assessed on more than just their financial impacts,” Random said. “That is the main ask is that we want. We want these data centers to be assessed in a in a holistic way and we want the communities that are impacted to have a seat at the table.”
Group members said as these developments rapidly increase, they will continue to speak out to demand a voice in their local communities.
