With the New York Yankees on the verge of clinching a postseason spot, the time has yet to come after the team lost 12-2 to the New York Mets on Saturday, which included another disappointing outing from pitcher Gerrit Cole. As the Yankees and Cole gear up for the playoffs, the star pitcher would get real about his recent outings and what needs to change.
In the loss to the Mets, Cole would log 4.1 innings, striking out four batters, while allowing five earned runs, nine hits, with three of them being home runs. Recording his ninth loss of the season. When leaving the game on Saturday, boos were heard from Yankee Stadium as he couldn’t navigate going deeper into his start, admitting that it’s time to make adjustments.
“I think it’s something that we got to figure out for sure,” Cole said,nk you got to start making adjustments.”

Cole’s last start for New York was a frustrating one as well, giving up four home runs on Sept. 6 against the San Diego Padres, though all of them were solo dingers, three of them in the first inning and one in the seventh.
“We were able to adapt last week in-game to respond,” Cole said. “This week, we just got bled out, really, and didn’t get deep… It’s all different offerings, it’s different sequences, it’s tough to pin down.”
The whiff rate has been down for Yankees’Gerrit Cole
After 20 starts into Cole’s season with the Yankees, an interesting note is that the pitcher’s whiff rate is at 22.3 percent, which has been down compared to 2022’s 34.1 percent. However, Cole ponders how the ABS (challenge system) has an impact on that.
“I think maybe chase and swing and miss across the board is down. So trying to find where those numbers would be relative to this environment is something that we need to navigate,” Cole said.
Cole and New York look to improve as the next start for the pitcher is scheduled for Sept. 18 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
