China’s A-share market closed out August on August 31 with all four major indices posting gains: the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.86%, the Shenzhen Component Index added 0.44%, the ChiNext Index gained 0.42%, and the STAR Composite Index led with a 1.9% advance. Combined turnover across the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges reached 2.15 trillion yuan, up 27.6 billion yuan (approximately $4.1 billion) from the previous session, with more than 3,100 stocks closing higher. AI application plays strengthened in the afternoon session, with Inspur Electronic Information, Unisplendour, and Cambricon lifting the server segment. The media and <a href="https://axiomcore.info/irelands-entertainment-and-media-market-set-for-steady-growth/” title=”Ireland’s entertainment and media market set for steady growth”>entertainment sector surged broadly, with Chinese Online and Mango Excellent Media among multiple stocks hitting limit-up. Coal and banking stocks climbed steadily, with Bank of China and China CITIC Bank both notching record highs while Postal Savings Bank of China advanced on heavy volume. Property leaders came under pressure, with China Merchants Shekou and Binjiang Real Estate leading decliners. Gold-related names pulled back in unison, with Baiyin Nonferrous and Hunan Silver falling more than 6%.

China A-Shares Close August on Broad Gains; Media and Entertainment Sector Sees Flurry of Limit-Ups as Shanghai Composite Rises 0.86%

On the final trading day of August, China’s A-share market saw active turnover as major indices across the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges advanced across the board. The Shanghai Composite Index closed up 0.86%, the Shenzhen Component Index rose 0.44%, the ChiNext Index gained 0.42%, and the STAR Composite Index stood out with a 1.9% surge. More than 3,100 stocks across the market finished higher, with hot money rotating rapidly between sectors.

Combined turnover on the two exchanges reached 2.15 trillion yuan, an increase of 27.6 billion yuan (approximately $4.1 billion) from the previous session. The moderate expansion in volume signaled a pickup in investor willingness to participate.

Among heavyweight sectors, coal and banking stocks climbed steadily, providing solid support for the indices. Bank of China and China CITIC Bank both refreshed record highs, while Postal Savings Bank of China advanced on expanding volume, underscoring continued investor preference for low-valuation blue chips.

In stark contrast to the strong sectors, leading Chinese property developers came under visible pressure. China Merchants Shekou and Binjiang Real Estate were among the top decliners, reflecting a still-cautious market stance toward the real estate sector.

Gold-related stocks pulled back in unison, with Baiyin Nonferrous and Hunan Silver among multiple names falling more than 6%, as earlier safe-haven sentiment cooled.

Overall, the August closing session exhibited structural divergence: technology growth names and low-valuation blue chips moved in tandem, while precious metals and select property stocks that had posted outsized gains earlier faced profit-taking. The moderate expansion in turnover, combined with more than 3,100 advancing stocks, indicated that the market’s wealth effect was broadening and investor sentiment showed marginal improvement heading into month-end.

Analysts noted that sustained activity in AI applications and the collective breakout in the media sector reflect a renewed capital focus on the technology growth theme. The successive record highs in banking stocks, meanwhile, demonstrate that high-dividend assets continue to attract long-term capital in a declining interest-rate environment. However, the pullback in property and gold sectors also serves as a reminder that sector rotation is accelerating, and investors should be wary of chasing rallies.
